Union Pacific Railroad?s Bailey Yard

North Platte, NE

The Union Pacific Railroad’s Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska, is the world’s largest classification yard, covering 2,850 acres and eight miles of track. Each day the yard moves roughly 10,000 cars, using two hump yards that roll cars over 35‑foot and 20‑foot mounds into 114 bowl tracks for assembly into outbound trains. Visitors can observe the yard’s operations from the Golden Spike Tower’s eighth‑floor deck, where binoculars provide a view of the sorting process, and from the seventh‑floor open deck to hear the diesel locomotives and rolling cars.
