Leland Olds Station

Stanton, ND

The Leland Olds Station, located near Stanton, North Dakota, was the first power plant constructed by Basin Electric and was named after a former Federal Power Commission member who advocated for consumer‑owned power generation. The facility contains two lignite‑fired units that were built in the 1960s and 1970s, drawing cooling water from the Missouri River and receiving coal from the Freedom Mine, and each unit is equipped with electrostatic precipitators that capture the majority of fly ash. The plant has been upgraded with low‑nitrogen‑oxide burners and a computer‑based control system, and it continuously monitors emissions such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, flow, and opacity.
