The Spirit Mound Station, located near Vermillion, South Dakota, is an oil‑fired peaking power plant that supplies electricity during periods of high demand or emergencies. The facility contains two 60‑MW combustion units that can be operated locally or remotely from the Leland Olds Station in North Dakota. Built in the late 1970s adjacent to a fuel pipeline and existing transmission lines, the plant meets all state and federal air and noise standards and serves as a reserve capacity to support reliability for rural customers.
